摘要

European Union member states are poised for a wrangle on global emissions reduction goals when their ministers meet Sept. 18 to agree on the bloc's common position for negotiations about a new United Nations climate deal. A group of predominantly Central and Eastern European member states wants the EU position to reflect the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a UN-organized body of thousands of scientists, three European Union diplomats said Sept. 16. Those countries, which include Hungary and Poland, back the long-term goal of a 40 percent to 70 percent reduction in heat-trapping gases by 2050 from 2010 levels, said the diplomats, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private.
