Electricity production costs for plants using renewable resources like onshore wind and solar energy have been falling steadily and will be able to generate electricity near or below costs of new fossil fuel-based power stations by 2020, an International Energy Agency official said. As a result, policymakers focused on climate objectives have in the last five years shifted their favor from fossil fuel technologies for new power plants to low-carbon technologies, Laszlo Varro, head of IEA's Gas, Coal and Power Markets Division, said Aug. 31. Varro made his comments during a Web presentation of a new joint report comparing projected electricity production costs for more than 180 plants to be commissioned in 2020, based on data from 22 countries, including Brazil, China and South Africa, covering about 75 percent of world power generation.
