Speakers: Chances Good for Paris Climate Accord, as Some Nations Start to Take Steps

There is a good possibility that an international agreement on new steps to address climate change will be reached at a summit in Paris in later this year since some countries already are taking steps that can serve as a basis for a broader agreement, panelists said at a University of Michigan Law School conference on sustainability. Climate talks in recent years have shifted to a more "bottom-up" approach, with countries taking the lead on their own strategies rather than trying to meet goals dictated by an international accord, David Waskow, director of the International Climate Action Initiative at the World Resources Institute, said at the April 17 conference.
