U.K. Low-Carbon Subsidies Attracting Investors for Renewable Energy Projects

The plans from Siemens AG to roll out production of its first wind turbine blades in northern England by the end of 2018 show that the U.K.'s new state incentives for low-carbon technology projects are working, an official from the nation's leading manufacturers organization said. "Siemens has sold its first two years of production," EEF senior energy and environment policy adviser Richard Warren said March 26, referring to the German firm's announcement that it will deliver wind turbines for Denmark's Dong Energy's 330-megawatt Walney Extension Offshore Wind Farm in northern England. Dong Energy, one of the main global players in offshore wind, received guaranteed state incentives known as Contracts for Difference (CfD) for three of its offshore wind projects (37 INER 645, 5/7/14). Siemens and its partner, Associated British Ports, are investing 310 million pounds ($461 million) for blade manufacturing, assembly and servicing facilities in Hull in northern England. Construction is scheduled to begin in July.
