Italian Companies to Produce Completely Compostable Single-Use Coffee Pods

Italian coffee giant Lavazza SpA and biochemical company Novamont SpA announced the creation of what they say is the first completely biodegradable and compostable single-use coffee machine pod. The new capsules, the results of a five-year research project at the Polytechnic University in Turin along with Lavazza and Novamont, will use third-generation Novamont bioplastic that can be recycled as organic material according to European Union standard EN 13432. Leftover grounds will be used to produce mushrooms, the companies said March 5. These particular pods will be compatible for making espresso.
