South Korea to Expand First Disposal Site For Low, Medium-Level Radioactive Waste

South Korea's nuclear energy policy committee said Feb. 5 that it would add more capacity to the nation's first radioactive waste disposal facility. The committee's Basic Plan for the Management of Low- and Intermediate-Level Radioactive Waste, approved by the Atomic Energy Promotion Committee (AEPC), calls for constructing a second-stage repository by 2019 at the existing nuclear waste site, which is set to begin operation in March in the southeastern city of Gyeongju.
