Safari Club Can Challenge Rule Designed To Protect Tanzanian Elephants

Safari Club International may champion the rights of American hunters to import their trophies after they've bagged a Tanzanian elephant, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit held Dec. 6 (Safari Club Int'l v. Jewell, 2016 BL 404772, D.C. Cir., No. 15-5170, 12/6/16). The club has standing to challenge a 2014 Department of Interior decision prohibiting importation of the trophies because of a "significant decline in Tanzania's elephant population," the court said in an opinion by Judge David S. Tatel.
