Taiwan Prepares to Ban Microbeads From Personal Care Products in 2017

Taiwan will ban cosmetic and personal care products containing microbeads in 2017, according to the Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration. TEPA Minister Lee Ying-Yuan said in a June 8 statement that the Taiwanese government has taken into account international trends in regulating cosmetic and personal care products containing microbeads, including the U.S. Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015. According to TEPA, nonbiodegradable microbeads pollute rivers and oceans because the tiny plastic micro-spheres cannot be easily collected and removed from aquatic environments. To mitigate water pollution, future regulations will ban the imports, manufacture, use and sale of products containing microbeads in Taiwan.
