摘要

The government of San Juan province fined Barrick Gold Argentina 146 million Argentine pesos ($9.5 million) March 11 for an incident at an open-pit gold mine that occurred last September, when more than a million liters of water with cyanide seeped into a mountain river. The fine is too small for such a big company as Barrick, according to Enrique Viale of the Argentine Association of Environmental Attorneys. "It's worth just seven days of gold" mining at Veladero mine on the Andes Mountains in western Argentina, he said.
