UNESCO Backs New Protected Areas, Plans International Network of Biosphere Reserves

The World Congress of Biosphere Reserves published a roadmap for protecting nearly 700 areas around the globe over the next decade, and added 20 new sites to the international system of biosphere reserves. The UNESCO organization announced the developments in a pair of documents released March 19 in Lima, Peru, at the conclusion of the 4th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves. The 30-point Lima Declaration and the Lima Action Plan 2016-2025 establish a pathway for management of the world's 669 biospheres, officials said.
