Canada Delays Decision on Controversial Lake Huron Radioactive Waste Project

Canada has further delayed a decision on whether to approve Ontario Power Generation's controversial plan for a deep geologic repository for low-and intermediate-level radioactive wastes near the shore of Lake Huron. The government wants additional information on the project's potential cumulative environmental impacts, an updated list of mitigation commitments for any identified adverse environmental effects and proposals for potential alternate locations for the repository, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) said in a Feb. 18 notice.
