Canada is proposing to follow the U.S. lead and ban the manufacture, import and sale of personal care products containing microbeads by 2020. But under its proposal announced Feb. 9, Canada's definition of microbead would specify synthetic particles much smaller than some being banned across the border. Canada plans to introduce draft regulations this year for a phased-out prohibition on the manufacture, import and sale of consumer products containing micro-beads, a major contributor to plastic litter, especially in aquatic environments. Microbeads may cause long-term harm to some animals and ecosystems, Environment and Climate Change Canada said Feb. 9 in a consultation paper.
