Amazon Dam Consortium to Pay for Environmental Impact

The consortium that runs the second biggest dam in Brazil's Amazon agreed to pay the government nearly $18 million to compensate for the environmental impact of the hydroelectric plant and its reservoir. Energia Sustentavel do Brasil (ESBR) will pay ICM-Bio, the arm of the Environment Ministry that creates and safeguards federally protected areas, 55 million reais ($17.7 million) in environmental compensation for the impact of the 3,750-megawatt (MW) Jirau hydroelectric plant, ICMBio said Feb. 23 in a statement.
