China is expanding efforts to reform its coal industry by shutting smaller, dirtier power plants in its battle against pollution and industrial overcapacity- Premier Li Keqiang plans to halt, delay or eliminate no less than 50 gigawatts of coal-fired power projects, according to a report delivered to the National People's Congress March 5. That's equal to about 6 percent of the country's total power generation capacity for the fuel as of 2015. The target is part of a larger five-year plan the government presented that seeks to eliminate 800 million metric tons a year of outdated coal production capacity by 2020.
