Swedish Electronic Audit Reveals Lead, Chlorinated Paraffins in 40% of Products

Almost 40 percent of low-cost electrical and electronic products, including bike lights, headphones, USB cables and Christmas decorations, contained banned substances such as short-chain chlorinated paraffins and lead, according to audits carried out by Sweden's Chemical Agency (Kemi). The audits, which took place throughout 2016, revealed that the discount electronics category has a "high rate of noncompliance" with Swedish and European Union law, according to a Dec. 12 statement from the agency. Such products will be "prioritized in enforcement activities in the future," the agency said in an accompanying report.
