The Arctic region continues to be one of the fastest-warming places on the planet, according to a yearly report from a group of international scientists released Dec. 12. The average annual air temperature over land was the second highest in the observational record in 2017, with a temperature 2.9 degrees Fahrenheit above the average for the period from 1981 to 2010, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-sponsored report.
