The European Union has TRUMPF Group, DMG Mori AG, and other machine-tool manufacturers in its sights for potential energy and greenhouse gas savings.The European Commission, the EU executive arm, started a public consultation April 16 on the energy consumption, repairability, and recyclability of machine tools, such as cutting, milling, grinding, and shaping equipment. The consultation, which also covers welding equipment, is the first step in the creation of possible EU ecodesign criteria that machine tools might have to meet in order to be sold in the EU.Ecodesign standards have already been adopted for about 20 product categories, including domestic appliances, computers, televisions, and industrial equipment such as chillers and electric motors.
