THE NEW NATIONAL ENERGY STRATEGY AIMS FOR ENERGY SECURITY IN THE BALTIC REGION

The new National Energy Strategy for 2020-2050 is currently undergoing legislative processes and is expected to be adopted by the end of this year. The Strategy will appear at a time which can be described as a "transitional period" in the history of the Lithuanian energy industry. After the closing down of Ignalina nuclear power plant in the end of 2009, Lithuania lost its primary source of electricity and, having no national gas or oil resources, energy security became number one priority of the state energy policy. Various energy security-related projects have been listed in the Strategy, most important of which certainly do target the overall Baltic region.
