In recent years, the work of the leather research units or institutes has focused on clean technology that minimises wastes. The attention is on each and every step of the leather-making process, which fulfils the clean-technology principles. The effluents discharged from the leather tanneries are a serious threat to the environment and one of the major pollutants in tannery effluent is synthetic dyestuffs. In view of the recent awareness of the carcinogenicity of some synthetic dyes, they have to be phased out. Natural dyes are an eco-friendly alternative to these hazardous dyes. Hence, the present research work has been taken on optimisation of the process for dyeing of leather with natural dyes extracted from onion peels. Leather samples dyed with onion peel dye produced a range of green shades.
