Good sourcing practice at the Indonesian mill of India-based viscose fibre giant Aditya Birla has paved the way for the company's commitment to a global policy of eliminating the sourcing of materials from ancient and endangered forests, according to the international environmental group that helped develop the policy. Between 70 and 100 million trees are felled annually for the production of dissolving pulp used to make fabrics such as viscose, modal, and lyocell, noted the Canada-based environmental group and Aditya Birla's partner, Canopy. At least 30% of these trees come from ancient and endangered forests. Aditya Birla has now said it is committed to avoiding using any endangered forest fibre in its products and will promote innovation in the development of fabrics made from new fibres that reduce demand for natural forest-sourced materials.
