Paving the way

Much has been achieved in recent years in improving road surfacing techniques - from the materials used, to the equipment that lays it. Several choices are available to road engineers in restoring road surfaces. For bitumen roads, either cheap and cheerful surface dressing with spray and chippings, or the more expensive 40mm-thick overlay of hot-rolled asphalt are the favoured options. Now there is a third option, namely 'thin' surfacings, which split the difference between surface dressings and 40mm overlays, coming in between 15mm and 25mm thick.
