Intermat '97 was the launching ground used by Caterpillar for its new range of engines. The 3400E series consists of three models: the 3406E, the 3408E and the 3412E. The key feature of the new engine series is an Electronic Control Module (ECM), an advanced engine management system developed by Caterpil-lar. This is linked to a set of sensors located within the en- gine, monitoring functions such as fuel temperature, engine oil pressure, coolant temperature, etc. This information is compared to performance parameters predetermined by the customer, and engine operation is adjusted accordingly.
