Underground waste and water systems are "ticking timebombs" in many cities. This is very much the case in the district of Gonsenheim in the Rhineland Palatinate capital of Mainz, Germany. Up until now, sewer and rain water have been led into the Gonsbach pipeline, or via a large channel under the Mombach main road into the water treatment plant. During heavy downpours of rain, the present system is not capable of handling such large volumes of water and some of the combined sewer and rainwater ends up in the Gonsbach stream, via rain spillways. This inevitably increases the level of pollution.
