Contractors the world over are approaching the new millennium with much caution. After a relatively prosperous early 1990s, the Asian financial crisis has had a serious knock-on effect on the world construction industry. Not only has there been a raft of construction cancellations in Asia, but the regional slowdown and the continuing slump in the Japanese economy has now begun to affect construction activity in other emerging martkets such as Latin America, Russia and Africa. This in turn has led international contractors to increase their participation in financing projects.
