New Calcining Facility Produces High-quality Lime

Just as milk is a good calcium source, calcium-rich lime is a staple in environmental protection, drinking-water purification, and steel, pulp and paper production. Used in pebble or powder form, lime is made by a process known as calcining, where raw limestone travels through a high-temperature kiln and converts to a material that is 85% to 95% pure calcium oxide. Southeastern U.S. lime users are the beneficiaries of a new production line commissioned in December 1997 by Blue Circle, Inc./Lime Division, of Roberta, Ala. Built as part of a $40-million modernization plan, the line encompasses kiln, preheating, product handling, and rail and truck loadout systems. The project has spanned 18 months, from awarding of equipment and construction contracts to trial production, and increased annual capacity from 250,000 t to 400,000 t.
