Airport expansion

The project to extend and elevate Runway 9R-27L at the Fort Lauderdale - Hollywood International Airport in Florida, US has an estimated cost of US$ 791 million. The new 8,000 ft (2,438 m) long south runway will terminate atop a new 60 ft (18.3-m) tall man-made embankment at the east end of the airport. This will allow the runway to cross over the Florida East Coast Railroad, US Highway 1, as well as a new airport perimeter road and access ramps. The three-year project will require more than 7 million yd~3 (5.4 million m~3) of fill material for the new embankment, while 100,000 yd~3 (76,455 m~3) of concrete will be used on the scheme, some 35,000 yd~3 (26,760 m~3) of which will go into the runway/taxiway bridge superstructures connecting the existing airport over the railroad and highway to the man-made embankment at the east end.
