2018 - THE WORST YEAR EVER FOR ENCLOSED SPACE ACCIDENTS INVOLVING SOLID BULK CARGO

On November 9th last, three crew members died on a ship at sea off Japan after entering a hold containing logs. It is believed that they were asphyxiated as a result of the oxygen in the space being depleted by the timber cargo.On the 13 November, two port workers died in the hold of a ship in Montevideo while unloading a cargo of logs. Two others were hospitalized, one in an induced coma. It is believed that they also died as a result of oxygen depletion in the space.
