'Real-world' benefits to operators and accountants

From time to time, all of us who work in the broadcast industry delude ourselves into thinking we've never had it so good, technologically speaking. The same thing happens in businesses, offices, factories and even homes around the world. A piece of new technology is introduced, the majority of people embrace it, are excited by it, use it and herald it as a vast improvement on what went before. But is that always the case? Isn't it true that sometimes we can all be blinded by science into believing that a new piece of kit is the answer to all our problems when, in reality, it could actually turn out to be rather unwieldy, difficult to use and expensive to run? One of the biggest issues broadcasters face today is ensuring that technology delivers real-world benefits across a wide range of television production processes. But the reality for a lot of operators 'at the sharp end' is greater responsibility and higher stress levels. Journalists today, for example, require far more skills than they would have needed a few years ago. They have to be more technically aware and it's our job, as designers, to help minimise that kind of trauma.
