When BBC Post Production began initial research in to MD in 1998 the objective was to find out not just how the technology worked but whether there was a commercial model for it. At that time it was very much a technology without a home. At that early stage, BBC Post Production wasn't convinced that the market was ready. There was a lot of hype around this new format, and manufacturers were pushing HD 24p as a replacement for film but we wanted to look at our investment strategy very carefully. Two post competitors in Bristol invested in tape-based HD editing suites purely to capture the HD market, one even investing in an HD telecine. A similar pattern began emerging in Soho. They were expecting a wave of business from co-productions with the US, Japan and Australia and the BBC as well.
