2004 has hardly been an annus mirabilis for the BBC. The scars from the Hutton fallout will not heal for some time and the long-term outlook for the BBC under whoever is appointed Director General is still unclear. Yet despite all of the bad blood spilt over the last year or so, in terms of broadcast the BBC looks to be shaping up nicely. In March this year, BBC Broadcast opened up to the press the doors to its new Broadcast Centre about which we looked at in this column in September last year. More than six months on, the good news for the BBC is that the Broadcast Centre appears to be delivering on its promises taking the BBC into new, unexpected areas. This journey may have serious ramifications for the industry as a whole.
