Changing Times

It's a fairly clear to see how the audio world has changed in recent years. From tape-based systems through to file-based systems, the emphasis has shifted towards non-linear file formats. All elements of audio creation are now part of this file-based production workflow; with a much wider use of related networks, such as servers, local area networks, wide area networks and, more recently, internet collaboration. But it's how these developments have affected the way in which the audio community works that's really interesting - the reality is that there will probably be a declining number of audio only facilities and, instead, more facilities that provide production-wide services, including offline editing, online editing and 3D. Audio post production has seen a move from smaller independent post houses, where there are multi-skilled operators, to full facility houses, with separate audio, video, graphics and production suites. This rise of the facilities house, in both the film and broadcast industries, provides a real one-stop service to clients for all aspects of production. So this means that networks have to cope not only with 'audio to audio' connection but with 'video to audio' connections too. This interaction between audio and video is essential to post facility houses - rather than moving drives or disks, networks now allow immediate file transfer.
