HD gets its wings

Fuelled by the serious interest now being shown by European broadcasters, HD is lumbering into the air like an Airbus A3 80. Yes, it will hit turbulence as it punches through the clouds of confusion over formats and, in, particular, which ones the EBU will officially endorse, but those clouds are already beginning to disperse. When Phil Laven, director of the EBU's technical department, stated that it favours the 720p/50 and 1080p/50 HD formats at IBC last year, he got a swift and heated response from Sony, whose HD products are based on the 1080i format. In January, this year, Laven issued a paper making two sets of recommendations for HD - one for emission standards and another for production standards.
