摘要

A proliferation of new distribution channels and platforms is challenging broadcasters to maintain their share of the mass market while finding ways to create new sources of revenue. Broadcasters are increasingly looking to their libraries for legacy content that can be repurposed by unlocking its hidden value. This urgent business need has been made more difficult by the way in which media has traditionally been created and managed. The financial and creative investments in intellectual property -the programmes or content - are in most cases trapped in physical objects such as tape or film. It's been estimated that 85% or more of existing content remains locked away on old tapes that are rapidly deteriorating to the point of total loss (oxide shedding, print-through) and in formats that are becoming obsolete (2" quad, anyone?) These tapes are costly to store, move and manipulate; they are subject to physical degradation, unauthorised copying, theft and loss - and the metadata (data describing the content) and information needed to locate the tape is often missing or inaccurate.
