Despite the best efforts of many manufacturers to impose what : amounts to a media asset management 'model' on the marketplace, broadcasters have steadfastly resisted the temptation to have a standard imposed on them. Every facility is fiercely protective of the working practices, databases and tricks of the trade it has developed over the years; as they help maintain a commercial or creative edge over the competition, it's unlikely that broadcasters will sweep them away simply because someone in a suit starts talking about 'compromise-free media asset commoditisation'. Those methods and methodologies - some might call them 'quirks' - also help to differentiate the broadcast industry from the wider IT market. If every broadcaster could simply walk into PC World or Radio Shack to buy a colourful box containing 'Media Asset Manager 2005', the industry would end up with rigid working practices, bland output and very bored audiences.
