The practical route to HD quality control

The world of television programme production and broadcasting is moving to HD. The most advanced HD market, the USA, has no fewer than 38 standards which are regarded as HD, although mercifully the big broadcasters have each moved into one of two camps: 1080/30i and 720/60p. Some European broadcasters, most notably the big satellite services, have announced HD services commencing in 2006, but have been rather reluctant to reveal much detail yet. We know, though, that BSkyB is to use a new design of set-top box from Thomson which supports 1080/25i and 720/50p (conveniently ignoring the fact that 720/50p is not a ratified standard), so it is safe to assume that both 1080 and 720 line HD will be prevalent in Europe in the future.
