John Dee's Occultism : Magical Exaltation through Power ful Signs

In he last couple of decades, several monographs have been devoted to the figure of John Dee. What is common in the works of Peter French (1972), Nicholas Clulee (1988), William Sherman (1995), Hakan Hakansson (2001), Deborah Harkness (1999) and now Gyorgy E. Szonyi, is that they all present Dee as a historical actor, through the complex and often perplexing personality of whom the complex and often perplexing age he lived in can be better understood. John Dee' career - however extraordinary it might have been - reflects well the curious and transitional situation of the intellectuals of his age between the role of the humanist or university intellectuals and that of the courtly scientists.
