IN SEARCH OF CONTACT PERIODICALS, COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES, ENLIGHTENMENT IN THE NETHERLANDS

The 18th century can justly be described as the age of the learned journal. From their conception during the late 17th century onwards, learned journals are said to have grown to maturity by the end of the next century. As a result of the political developments, tax policies and freedom of the press, periodical publication underwent another transformation somewhere in the nineteenth century, and then again in the second half of the twentieth. The development of the periodical press during the 18th century is commonly associated with several other developments in culture and society occurring in the same era. Periodicals are said to have played a part in, or can be seen as an indication of, the rise of the public sphere. In these same years, literacy supposedly grew considerably, while the way in which people read changed from an intensive to an extensive way.
