摘要

This section is devoted to the question of the audience of learned periodicals. Patrick Latour in his paper on the relationship between periodicals and Parisian libraries indirectly deals with the reading audience as he studies the role played by libraries in providing readers with periodicals. In an attempt to study communication strategies in the Netherlands, Edwin Van Meerkerk analyses the dialogue between Dutch journalists and their readers. In the other two papers, one by Patrizia Delpiano about 18th century Northern Italy and the other by Miriam Nicoli on the Journal de Lausanne (1786-1792), the question of the audience is directly addressed through the identification of the potential public postulated by the journalists. The real public, the one who actually reads the pages of the periodicals, is not easily found.
