Visual security studies: sights and spectacles of insecurity and war.

Juha Vuori and Rune Andersen's edited volume Visual security studies is a welcome addition to the expanding visual politics literature. It features contributors from a variety of academic disciplines, as well as from artists and those creating visuals as a research method. This is a fruitful combination, offering readers empirical breadth and creative methods. Their volume comes on the heels of Visual global politics edited by Roland Bleiker (Routledge, 2018). However, it makes a more specific contribution to visual scholarship by focusing on the ways visuality meets security studies. To this end, the book is centred on three ways (in)security and visuality intersect. First, on visuality as a modality, where images represent and signal security. Second, visuality as practice, where images construct (in)security. Third, visuality as method, where images are a research tool used to make security visible.
