This book analyzes the history, organization, strategies, and successes and failures of a wide range of armed groups, including terrorist groups, insurgents, organized crime organizations, pirates and street gangs. The concept of armed groups thus encompasses an array of organizations and actors that use force to achieve their objectives. This range makes it more difficult to find common themes to completely link together the disparate types of groups included in the book. At the same time, though, the encompassing nature of the book reflects important real-world developments. Less armed conflict today occurs between similarly-organized nation states. Instead, both major and minor powers have confronted a diverse array of threats to use force.
