摘要

Up to 80% of China's fossil fuel imports pass by ship through the Malacca Strait - a narrow passage between Malaysia and Indonesia. By 2020, China is expected to import as much as 80% of its total petroleum, much of which must traverse sea lines of communication (SLOC) controlled by the US Navy. To investigate the impact that China's 'Malacca Dilemma' is having upon its maritime policies, the China Maritime Studies Institute of the US Naval War College convened a 2006 conference on the subject. At over 500 pages with 21 chapters, the resulting conference volume brings together many of the top US experts on Chinese naval and energy issues.
