We hear of how patent, technology and brand licensing generates huge revenues for multinationals. The stories are generally true. IBM and Texas Instruments are typical examples of large multinationals with huge revenue-generating licensing businesses.rnIBM's efforts are unsurpassed - they have for the 17th year running been granted more US patents than any other applicant (4,914 in 2009, which according to Business Week magazine (13 January 2010) is more than HP, Oracle, Apple, Microsoft, Accenture and Google put together) and IP licensing revenue in 2009 was expected to exceed $1.1 billion in 2009. Of course, its R&D budget was $5.8 billion (~6% of total revenue).
