An Asian-American rock band from Oregon will attempt to persuade a federal appeals court that it deserves a trademark for its name, The Slants, even though the government considers it to be an ethnic slur. In 2013, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) rejected the name on the basis that it was disparaging to Asian Americans. Federal law prohibits registration of disparaging trademarks. "As a slur it's obscure at best, even in its heyday in the 1940s," band front-man Simon Tarn said in an interview.
