NATURE'S WEALTH: THE ECONOMICS OF ECOSYSTEM SERVICES AND POVERTY

This compilation of case studies on ecosystem services and poverty tackles the complex, interactive relationship between environmental degradation and income. It provides a balanced perspective, using empirical studies to describe the provisioning of ecosystem services associated with biodiversity and across marine, forest, water, and land environments. Most of the world's biodiversity occurs in remote areas of developing countries, with little or no economic development. Through the use of innovative management approaches, monetary and nonmonetary incentives, and other forms of intervention, ecosystem services can be used to improve local livelihoods while conserving natural resources.
