I'd had a huge interest in the developing world since 1960, when I started visiting Nigeria and India and Brazil. Poverty and development were things I had addressed in my nonbusiness activities — the Population Council and Rockefeller Foundation and other boards that I was on — because I think they are the crucial issues of our times. And I was really overwhelmed and thrilled at the chance of the World Bank job. It was the fulfillment of a dream.
