Largest among Austria's banks is Erste Group (market cap end-2008: €5.1 billion, year-end share price €16.2, down 67 percent on year and 34 percent over a 5-year period); followed by Vienna Insurance Group (€3.1 billion, share price: €24.12, down 56 percent on year and up 42 percent over 5 years); and Raiffeisen International (€3 billion, share price: €19.3, down 81 percent on year and 41 percent since its IPO in 2005). To strengthen Tier 1 (core) capital, various Austrian banks intend to sell the government non-voting shares. Erste Group plans to offer €2.7 billion and Raiffeisen International's parent, Raiffeisen Zentralbank, €1.7 billion.
