In late January,Naguib Sawiris, founder of Egypt's Orascom Telecom Homing, was flying in his private jet to Paris to meet his father, who was due to have surgery in the French capital. The previous day thousands of demonstrators had occupied Cairo's Tahrir Square to protest the authoritarian rule of Hosni Mubarak - the opening shot of an unprecedented popular uprising. As the protests grew in size and intensity, Sawiris ordered his pilot to turn the plane around and head back to Cairo. As a liberal democrat, his heart was with the rebellion, and he wanted to be part of it.
