Harvest Fund Management Co. has been a pioneer in China's asset management industry since its founding in 1999. The Beijing-based firm gained expertise by selling a 19.5 percent stake to Deutsche Asset Management in 2005 (it's since grown to 30 percent). Harvest has grown rapidly to become the country's second-largest manager, with 227 billion yuan ($36 billion) in assets at the end of 2011. Now the firm is seeking to expand abroad through its four-year-old Hong Kong subsidiary, Harvest Global Investments. The unit's chief executive, Singapore native Peng Wah Choy, discussed the firm's strategy with Institutional Investor's Asia bureau chief, Allen T. Cheng.
