Model Investing Leo de Bever looks to replicate Ontario's success in Alberta

If investing is all about taking appropriate and well-understood risks, a government agency's raison d'etre Is to avoid those same risks. So when the Canadian province of Alberta created Alberta Investment Management Corp. in January 2008 to implement a direct-investing model, it hired Leo de Bever, one of the pioneers in understanding investment risk. De Bever had been a senior adviser to Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan's then-CIO, Robert Bertram, from 1994 to 2004. Early on at Ontario Teachers, de Bever used newly available computer power to design systems that tracked and analyzed returns on risk, pointing out opportunities in Infrastructure, timberland and commodities. De Bever, 64, also oversaw currencies and real-return bonds.
