Dean Vogel is mad, and he's not going to take it anymore. Already fed up with politicians and billionaires from San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed to former energy trader John Arnold sticking their noses into public education, the California Teachers Association president blew his top over a recent brief from the TIAA-CREF Institute, the research arm of financial services giant TIAA-CREF. Vogel's reaction could have had something to do with co-author Josh McGee, vice president of public accountability for the $725 million Laura and John Arnold Foundation. Then there's the paper, which disputes a 2008 study by the Washington-based National Institute on Retirement Security showing that defined contribution pensions provide benefits inferior to those of traditional public plans.
